Thomas Scott immigrated to Virginia with his brothers and sisters in the mid 1700's. He lived in Harrisonburg, Rockingham, VA and had a family of at least 3 daughters and 1 son. His great niece, Mary A. Reid, recalls two daughters who married James Brown and Henry Welch. In her book, Maria Carr2 states that Abraham Smith's first wife was a daughter of Mr. Thomas Scott. These are supported by marriage bonds found in Rockingham County. She also states that he had one son who was "very wild."
Maria Carr remembers Thomas Scott as a "very nice old gentleman" who was a friend of her grandfather. He had a stone house in Harrisonburg where he lived with his daughter, Jane Scott Welsh, until his death. According to a deposition documented in Chalkley, this house was built about 1787. He had a store next to his house that was a frame building painted "Spanish Brown." He was a trustee of the old stone Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg. There were four high pews in each corner of the building; Thomas Scott had the SW corner pew.
In August, 1798, Thomas Scott was president of the Harrisonburg town council. At that time he was taxed with two houses, one of the first class, one of the second class. The one of the first class was probably the stone house that stood on the south corner of N. Main and Elizabeth Street.

2. JANE3 SCOTT (THOMAS2, WILLIAM1) died Bef. 1823. She married HENRY WELCH December 04, 1806 in Rockingham County, VA. The marriage bond was given by Wm. Scott, consent by Thomas Scott. They were married by Rev. Benjamin Erwin. He married (2) MARY T. ALLEN December 11, 1823 in Augusta County, VA. In 1826 they moved to Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, MI. She died November 27, 1847 in Ann Arbor, MI.
Henry Welch was also among the more prominent of the earliest settlers of Ann Arbor. He came here in 1826 with his family from the vicinity of Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was for several years one of the most prominent and successful merchants in the village, and occupied a store on the southwest corner of Main and Huron streets. He was a gentleman of the Virginia school and possessed excellent business qualities. His two daughters are still living here, one the widow of Dr. Samuel Denton and the other the widow of Olney Hawkins.
